When you use insurance to cover the cost of therapy, I must provide you with a diagnosis in order to justify enrolling you in therapy. I will also have to report to your insurance company on your progress and why treatment continues to be “medically necessary.” Insurance companies can request access to your private health information, which can include notes, diagnosis, goals and payment information.
Additionally, having a mental health diagnosis on your health record may potentially make it more difficult or expensive to get health insurance in the future.
Paying for therapy out of pocket gives you more control over your session. You can choose to have longer sessions (not covered by insurance), which has been proven to be helpful for certain evidenced-based therapies, such as EMDR and Brainspotting.
I encourage all clients to, when possible, call their insurance company to understand their coverage before starting any treatment. If I am out of network with your insurance, I can provide you with a superbill to submit for reimbursement of some fees from your insurance company.

Your mental health is an investment, not an expense

Do you see clients in your office or virtually?
Both! I offer telehealth sessions as an option to all of my clients. As long as you have a reliable internet connection and a quiet, private space to talk, you can meet with me “virtually” from the comfort of your own home. That being said, I believe that being in the room with someone as they work on their trauma brings an added level of support.
Is what we talk about confidential?
What you share in therapy is generally private and protected health information. There are some exceptions to confidentiality, such as imminent safety concerns about yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse or neglect. Before your first session with me, you will receive documents which outline specifics on confidentiality and you can ask questions about it during our first session.
What happens next?
If you are interested in how I can support you, reach out to schedule a free 15-minute phone or video consultation call. This is your opportunity to tell me your goals for therapy and to ask questions about therapy and me. If you believe we might be a good match, we can then schedule the initial session.
What should I do in a crisis or mental health emergency?
I am not available for 24/7 support or consultation. If your are currently in crisis and feel unsafe, please cal the Colorado Crisis Line at 1-844-493-8255, text TALK to 38255 or call 911. For additional information, please go to Colorado Crisis Services. Additionally, there is a national number, 988, to call for you to connect with a counselor for suicide prevention and mental health crisis. You can also reach out to me and see if I can find an earlier appointment for you.
